MS Media Science

Eligibility and Admission Criteria 

a) Minimum 16 years of education (bachelor’s degree) in Media & Communication Studies or related fields such as Journalism, Advertising, Public Relations, Multimedia, or Communication Design, with at least 50% marks (annual system) or 2.0 CGPA (semester system) from an HEC-recognized university.
b) To align with the HEC Graduate Education Policy (2023), Intradisciplinary admissions (within 10 broad disciplines UNESCO (ISCED-F 2013) may be considered, provided that the applicant completes up to 9 credit hours of deficiency courses. c) University’s own entrance test with a minimum score of 60%, or GAT Subject / GRE / HAT General or equivalent with a minimum score of 50%. Mandatory university interview.
 

PROGRAM LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the MS in Media & Communication Studies are:
1. To develop students’ advanced understanding of theories, concepts, methodologies and interdisciplinary approaches in media and communication studies. 
2. To enhance students’ critical thinking to analyze prevailing communication issues and assess possible solutions using advanced analytical tools in political, cultural, and social contexts.
3. To cultivate research skills through critical engagement with literature and conduct of research studies that contribute to academic and professional discourse.
4. To foster students' sense of inclusive, ethical, and responsible communicative practices in professional and academic contexts.
 

PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the completion of Master of Studies in Media & Communication Studies, the graduates will be able to:
1. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of theories, concepts and methodologies in Media and Communication Studies and integrate interdisciplinary approaches to analyze and address complex media-related and societal issues in a globalized world.
2. Apply advanced analytical tools and research methodologies to critically evaluate the roles of media in political, cultural and socio-economic contexts, and propose innovative solutions to contemporary challenges in media industries and communication practices.
3. Conduct independent, original research in Media and Communication Studies critically engaging with scholarly literature and employing advanced research methods to generate insights that contribute to the academic, professional and policy discourse in media.
4. Demonstrate inclusive, ethical, and responsible communication practices in both academic and professional settings.

Thesis writing guidelines

a. Course work of 26 x credit hours is required to be completed by each Scholar preferably in 3 x semesters. Scholars should obtain minimum 2.5/4.0 CGPA.
b. In addition to coursework, a research thesis of 6 credit hours must also be completed individually as mandatory fulfilment of the degree program. Requirement of research thesis cannot be substituted with additional course work.
c. Research work on the thesis shall commence only after the scholar has successfully completed the required coursework (24 credit hours) of the program with a minimum CGPA of 2.5. Students are required to begin working on their research proposal in the third semester, along with the 2-credit hour Quran course. However, students who intend to complete their degree within 1.5 years may initiate proposal writing in the second semester, provided they have fulfilled the coursework requirements and obtained the minimum CGPA of 2.5.
d. The final Thesis, with a word count between 20,000 and 25,000, must undergo a plagiarism check by the relevant committee before submission. As per HEC guidelines, the Turnitin Similarity Index must be below 19%.
